“Once the soul awakens, the search begins and you can never go back. From then on, you are inflamed with a special longing that will never again let you linger in the lowlands of complacency and partial fulfillment. The eternal makes you urgent. You are loath to let compromise or the threat of danger hold you back from striving toward the summit of fulfillment.”
– John O’Donohue
You think that you may be experiencing a soul awakening. However, you are not quite sure what the soul is, what this awakening involves and why it’s even happening. So, in this space I will break it down, sharing the journey of the soul against the backdrop of my own experiences. Doing so in a way that enables you to identify the parallels and similarities in your own soul journey. Inspiring you to take the steps towards reconnecting with your own soul so that you can align with the real you, your purpose and dreams.
Defining the soul
Here is my definition of the soul:
The essence of who you truly are. An infinite aspect of You that knows why you are here and who you were created to be.
Purpose of the soul
Your soul wants to wake you up. It guides you to detach from the stories that hold you back, heal the inner struggles and stop running from your own shadow. In doing so, reconnecting you with the soul and the energies working alongside you from the other side. Ultimately, leading you to remember who you and what you came here to do.
Prior to your soul awakening, you are busy creating and living your life. Pursuing a professional career, enjoying all of the trappings of modern living – going to the best rooftop bars, socialising in the ‘right’ circles and carrying the latest addition to your ever-growing designer handbag collection.
On paper, your life looks amazing and to anyone looking at they would think that you are the happiest girl in the world.
During this phase, you tend to ignore that inner feeling that suggests you’re settling for less, that it’s time to change things up or uplevel. After all, you’re achieving and doing all of the things that are expected of you. With that in mind, you think to yourself: Why do I want to go and ruin it all on the basis of a feeling?
The meltdown comes before an awakening. It’s that point where you look at life where this picture perfect life that you have created starts to fall apart at the seams. Sometimes this happens over a period of a time whilst at other times it can be a sudden turn of events that brings everything crashing down all at once. Some examples of this might include:
- Break down of a relationship / soulmate break-up
- Death of a family member or friend
- Sudden loss of a job
- Accident, stint in hospital or traumatic event
- A comment from another person that touches your heart
Sometimes the experience can literally bring you to your knees, praying to know why life isn’t working out in the way that you had wanted it to and what the hell you are meant to do now. This meltdown is the storm, the dark night before the awakening of the soul.
The awakening process is two-fold. On the one hand, you are awakening to the truth that life isn’t as beautiful as you have made it out to be. Yet, on the other hand, you are awakening to the realisation that you now have the opportunity to create a life that feels good from the inside out.
During this phase, you will begin to see things differently and start asking smarter questions, such as:
- Why am I here?
- What am I here to do?
- Why can I not let go and move on?
These questions are focusing on inward rather than on outward appearances or other people. In many ways this is you, awakening to the idea that if you want to be better, do better, feel better and live better then YOU have to be the one to make the changes. And, on a deeper level, you know that the inner feeling that brought you to this point is all the feeling that can lead you out of this rut.
When the soul awakens you have a choice to make:
- Stay at the crossroads
- Step onto the crossroads
Deep down you know which choice is optimal for your soul growth but that doesn’t make it any easier, which is why you may choose to stay on the crossroads. A choice that I have made many times before. After all, stepping onto the crossroads will mean that you face change, be led to let go of the familiar and the old, whilst throwing light on your shadow side.
“The greatest challenge of the soul awakening is to not run away from what from you’ve been resisting but to walk towards it.”
Yet, from previous experience, I have come to learn that even if you choose to remain, your soul alarm clock will ring again. This time it will ring that little bit louder and will keep getting louder until you make the choice that leads to optimal healing, growth and alignment with the woman you were created to be.
The healing process involves detangling from the old energy and inner struggles that are creating your current reality. It is also a time where you will begin to integrate your shadow and call back in those parts of your soul that you have lost along your journey.
Each person’s healing journey will be different yet one thing that I have found to be true is this:
“The soul will work with your guides, angels and higher self to guide you to the people, teachers, learnings, situations and interests that can support you in going within to find the answers, as well as heal from the inside out.”
Within the healing process, you are also clearing the energy that is associated with those inner struggles and beliefs that no longer serve you.
Through the healing phase you begin to remember and see yourself as you truly are. This brings you to the phase where it’s time to build a relationship with the real you. It’s almost like getting to know yourself again as you reclaim your gifts and the magic within, setting new standards for yourself in all areas of your life.
During this stage it’s natural to have moments of uncertainty as you begin to show up in the world as the real you. Yet as you continue to show up you strengthen your energy and connection to yourself, as well as God, the Angels, your guides and the Universe. Simultaneously, you continue to consciously create your reality, using your awareness of energy to support you rather than drag you down.
This is a key phase because the relationship you have with yourself directly impacts the way that you show up in the world and your thoughts. All of which contributes to and impacts your ability to come into alignment, not just with yourself but your purpose and dreams.
In building that relationship with yourself you become fully aligned with the woman you were created to be and put yourself in a better position to manifest your soul dreams into reality.
What I have offered here is a whistle-stop tour of the soul and the journey that it goes on as it awakens. A journey that, in parts will break you open and bring you to your knees. However, with the least resistance and the right support, it is possible for you to heal, integrate and rise again. This time as a woman who knows and loves herself to the core. A woman who remembers who she is, what she came here to do and who consciously creates a life that she deserves. And if there is any part of you that resonates with that then maybe it’s worth going within to take that journey with the soul.
